Laminate Flooring

What is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a multi-layered flooring product crafted by fusing several materials together. The core layer is typically composed of high-density fiberboard (HDF) or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), while the top layer consists of a high-resolution image of natural wood, stone, or tile. This photographic layer is covered by a transparent wear layer, which provides protection against scratches, stains, and fading. The layers are bonded together using high-pressure and heat, creating a strong and durable flooring material.

Pros

Affordability: One of the main reasons people opt for laminate flooring as it is a cost-effective option. Compared to natural timber, which is more expensive, laminate provides a similar look at a fraction of the price. This makes it a great option for those on a tight budget.

Resilience: Laminate flooring is highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. The composite timber material used makes it resistant to scratches, making it ideal for high-traffic areas, busy households with kids and pets. Additionally, the top layer provides UV resistance, which means the colour is less likely to fade over time.

Versatility in Design: Laminate flooring comes in an extensive range of colours. Everything from light to dark and warm to cool tones. There is a colour palette for every design preference.

Low maintenance: Another advantage of laminate is that it is low maintenance, making it a practical choice for busy households or commercial spaces. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping are sufficient to keep it clean and well maintained.

Cons

Limited Refinishing Options: Unlike timber flooring, laminate cannot be sanded or refinished. If it suffers significant damage, it may need to be replaced entirely.

Susceptible to Water Damage: Whilst laminate is water resistant, it is not entirely waterproof. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the planks to swell or warp, making it unsuitable for areas prone to flooding or humidity, such as bathrooms or laundries.

Sound and feel: Some people find that laminate flooring lacks the authenticity of real timber in terms of both sound and feel. It can sometimes produce a hollow sound underfoot and might not have the warmth of natural texture of real timber.
